Getting Started with Quarto Presentations
Start with the default template and explore available themes.
🇺🇸 Hi 👋,
This is the first post in a series that aims to help you create awesome and engaging Quarto presentations. The goal is to help you move from learning the basics of a Quarto presentation to creating a presentation you can actually use at work.
Overview
Quarto supports three types of presentation output or format:
revealjs
— reveal.js (HTML)pptx
— PowerPoint (MS Office)beamer
— Beamer (LaTeX/PDF)
I’m not a fan of either MS Office or LaTeX formats. They tend to create, rather than solve, more problems for you.
If you read my series on paged HTML
documents, you know I’m biased. I prefer HTML
outputs because they force you to learn different skills that are more applicable to digital data products than MS Office or LaTeX outputs. For this reason, I want you to learn (or at least practice) how to build presentations using revealjs
.
Create A Quarto Presentation File
First, create a presentation based on the default template. Then, read this page to learn the basics of working with revealjs
presentations.
Just like we did with the paged HTML
document, you can get started editing by outlining an engaging presentation:
## Background
Brief introduction.
## Bottom Line
- Main finding
- This finding is important because...
## Explanation
Everything the audience needs to understand the bottom line.
## So What
Tell your audience all the reasons why your findings are important or useful.
## Call to Action
Invite the audience to act based on the bottom line.
Again, the goal of this outline is to communicate the bottom line quickly (within the first minute of the presentation). This grabs people’s attention right away and you spend the rest of the time describing and explaining the bottom line, instead of slowly building toward a finding reveal.
Explore Available Themes
Explore the available themes before trying to customize the presentation. There are several themes available you can explore.
As you change themes, take notes on the style elements that you’d like to replicate in your own presentation. Do you need to add logos or images to your template? Do you need section title slides? And more importantly, what are the elements that you want to replicate in every presentation, regardless of the topic? You can use the answers to these questions to create a roadmap of features you’d like to implement in presentations moving forward.
Up next: You’ll learn how to print revealjs
slides to PDF and start creating your own template by editing fonts and adding background images.
🇪🇸 Hola 👋,
¿Necesitas agregar logotipos o imágenes a tu plantilla?
